On Trend.... Holiday Glitz for Spring

You have all that left over glitz andglamour from the holidays and New Year’s celebrations. So what now,with all the sequins? Recently, a friend asked me how, if at all shecould wear her sparkling pieces from a holiday party as real clothingfor work or for play, and not to look like, ahem, a lady of theevening, so to speak. I was so excited to do something shiny.Especially, with the lovely Camille Grammer on the cover of the mostrecent REGARD Magazine. She looked absolutely beautiful in glamoroussparkly Oday Shakar designs.

So here are a few tips to get yougoing:

Pair your glitter tank with crisp lightcolored denim to dress it down. Anchor and tone the sparkle itself bywearing a darker jacket or blazer. Try flat, like a loafer insteadheels to keep it all balanced.
A glittery skirt can be toned down witha casual oversized cargo shirt. Color is a great way to keep thesparkle in check. Leather will also tone down the skirt. Try aleather blazer and wedges in tonal colors to bring it all together.
Take the pants from the sequin suit youbought this year, and pair it with lots of color. Try a blazer in acool color with shoes to match. This will be a great look for a nightout.

On Trend..... Cutouts and Sheers

In our current issue of REGARD MAGAZINE,Tiffany Hines sizzles in the fabulous sheer and cutout dresses by Donna Mizani.Cutout dresses and sheer pleated chiffon bottom dresses are having amini moment in fashion, being seen on all the major runway shows lastyear. I love both trends, so here are a few ideas to help youincorporate these trends into your wardrobe.

1. Sheer pleated skirts are really hotright now, but it can be hard to figure out what to pair them with. Apleated skirt can be a bit dressy, so dress it down with boots and adenim jacket.

2. The sheer top can go from day to nightchanging only a few things. Paired with a circle skirt, flats and across body bag in a fun color make it appropriate for work or a dayout about town. Change the flats to heels and the cross body bag to aclutch, and you’re ready for a fun night out.

3. The cutout dress is a little tricky.You want to be sure your cutouts highlight an asset and arestrategically placed to be flattering. Cutouts are super sexy so keepeverything else simple and you can’t go wrong.

Trend Report.... Black is the new Black

If you’re a fan of the Lifetime hit show “Project Runway,” you will recognize the name of designer Michael Costello. He is the funny, amazingly self-taught designer from season 8, who will also be featured in the soon to air Project Runway All-Star 2012, that I can’t wait to watch. Recently, Regard Magazine got to shoot some of Michael’s new designs, and I was really inspired by them. His use of dark colored furs and sequins in simple but elegant design is super chic and I loooooove the idea of all black. Worn by the beautiful the Beau Dunn, Michael Costello Couture gowns featured at La Maison de Fashion, are stunning.

Wearing a LBD or a black gown is one thing, but wearing black all over can sometimes be a bit morbid in appearance, but there is a way. Using different textures and tonal patterns can make an all-black outfit lush and cool looking. Be sure to add luxurious fabrics like faux furs, sequins, and a pop of color, if you like, for the shoe or bag. Or, go for it and try black from head to toe! Have Fun!

One of my favorite looks from the current issue of Regard Magazine is the gorgeous Katie Leclerc in a black and cream color blocked Shanna Gall gown, from the amazing La Maison de Fashion. The dress is fabulous and classic, with an edge. I love black and white/cream together. It’s always fresh, will never go out of style, and is an easy way to always be chic. Here are a few of my favorite looks and tips for the transition from summer to fall in my favorite color scheme. Chic for everyone!

-Trade your whites for creams, and off whites. The slight color grade reads more fall than crisp white from summer. However, If you love white, add more black!

-For fall, try color blocking as opposed to mixing prints. This follows the very minimalist trend that is all the rage.

70’s inspired fashions are the hottest trends walking the fall runways, and our recent shoot with the beautiful actress Caity Lotz, was full on 70’s glam with a modern twist. Caity is no stranger to a wardrobe based on a specific era as she may be most recognizable from her role on AMC’s Mad Men. For Regard Magazine, she dons designer Dena Burton’s leopard, furs and a slinky, liquid metallic jumpsuit, channeling some major 70’s style. It’s easier than ever to inject some cool retro into your own wardrobe and it’s not necessary to be 70’s from head to toe. Self taught jewelry designer, Rodrigo Otazu, hails from Buenos Aires Argentina and is based in New York City. His designs are derived from a myriad of inspirations including music, travel, fashion, arts, and architecture, thus creating an essential vital energy from where he clearly draws his passions and inspiration to craft highly original creations of stunning style. With his designs available in 15 countries, including London, Paris, Amsterdam, Dubai, Moscow and Milan, Rodrigo Otazu is quickly becoming a global brand. Fashion and music icons such as Madonna, Lady Gaga, Kylie Minogue, Lauryn Hill, Aretha Franklin, and Britney Spears have donned Rodrigo's creations. Also, Rodrigo's designs have been featured in Vogue, Elle, and in the film “Sex in the City 2.”

What was your motivation for teaching yourself how to design jewelry?

I've always loved fashion. I'm not sure where that love came from. I guess it has been in my blood. I design jewelry, shoes, and handbags. I love accessories because they can enhance any look. A simple t-shirt and cut-offs could look high end paired with the right cuffs and heels. Accessories are definitely one of the most fun aspects of fashion for me.

Where do you draw your inspiration for your designer collections?

I look at life. I have a passion for music, architecture, and basically all expressive art forms. My designs capture this love. I also look at pop culture, and the woman that I would want to see wear my designs. I have created pieces for dynamic women like Grace Jones, Madonna, Daphne Guinness... the list goes on! My main goal is to make a woman's own inner beauty shine. My work only serves as a bridge for an individual's unique beauty and grace.

Lady Gaga recently wore your designs in her national Google Chrome ad campaign. How excited were you with this accomplishment? (Describe the specific jewelry piece and inspiration behind it)

Lady Gaga is the girl that everyone wants to be, so the key was punching the tones and every inch of my body to achieve that extra edge that she loves so much. This was not the first time I've worked with her and it will not be the last. I helped with the meat dress for the MTV Video Music Awards. That was something to remember!

Speaking of accomplishments, you’ve won several awards including the CFDA Awards. How does it feel to be recognized for your design work?

I am thrilled of course. I was so happy to see my designs shining on stage. Karolina Kurkova is one of my favorite models of all times, so it could not go wrong!

Being a designer in fashion always has its ups and downs. It can be even more difficult when you’re designing jewelry. What advice do you have for up and coming jewelry designers?

Focus, focus, and focus, and this is true not only for designers. Life is full of ups and downs, and as long as you have your goals in mind and move carefully and concentrate nothing can go wrong. Simply believe in and love what you do.

What can we expect for your future collections and what other projects do you have coming up?

Sandra Vergara looks like a glamorous and modern pinup in vintage style dresses inspired by 1930’s silver screen glamour, elegant 1940’s film noir and the sexy 1950’s swing era, by Stop Staring. Vintage inspired garments, especially dresses are a big trend right now, with the coming return of “Mad Men,” and it’s not a trend that’s going anywhere. However, these antiquated styles can be a little tricky to add to your wardrobe and pull off. Here are a few tips to help you get started:

-If you happen to be straight up and down and want to maximize your curves, try a body hugging silhouette with a cowl or a plunging neckline. This shape will give the illusion of fuller curves and a more bountiful bust line.

A gigantic trend for the upcoming fall season will be snakeskins and snakeskin prints. It is sort of an updated and more edgy take on animal prints. The lovely Ms. Karina Smirnoff is magnificent in a Dina Bar-El snakeskin dress, featured in the last issue of REGARD Magazine. This "Dancing with the Stars,” Alum is right on trend because this look has been on all the fall runways from Chloe’ to Calvin Klein, and is making a solid stand as a trend with staying power. This is a bold and striking print or skin to wear so it can be a little tricky to integrate this trend into your wardrobe. Try it as a belt, shoes or a bag, if you’re a beginner. If you feel ready to tackle snakeskin head on, try it as a garment like a skirt, or a top. However you plan to try snakeskin out, do it soon. This trend is hot!

Lisa Gastineau has been a maven of fashion and glamour for years. Recently, she graced us with her style know-how and gave great face in a beautiful spread featuring her very chic and fabulous jewelry line, Tre Glam. She looks absolutely ravishing in a diamond encrusted octopus and bangles covered in precious gemstones expertly paired with a glamorous leopard print blouse.

Animal prints have been classic staples for generations, but if overdone, you may run the risk of looking like an animal from a Barnum and Bailey Circus act. Not a good look. Be sure to pair your animal print with solid neutrals for balance and bright pops of solid color to add visual interest.
